Is There a Perfect Time to Post on Social Media?

Is There a Perfect Time to Post on Social Media

If you’re on social media, you’ve probably seen correlation between the time you post on social media and how many interactions they get.

A big part of a marketing strategy is knowing exactly when to post and on what platform. Today, we’re tackling each social media site and determining what time of the day and week is best to get optimal results.

First, Let’s Talk Time Zones

If you’re an influencer, a brand, or just someone who’s looking for more likes and comments on social media, you should still consider what time zone you’re looking to target. If multiple time zones are in question, it’s likely best to post multiple times a day. However, if you’re an influencer based on the west coast trying to catch the attention of those who live on the east coast, you should be posting during the recommended time of day for the east coast. In this case, if the recommended time to post is 11 a.m. on a Wednesday, then you want to post at 8 a.m. on Wednesday for your east coast following.

Facebook

By far, Facebook has the most users; it seems like everyone is on Facebook, right? Just about! Facebook reports that it has the most active users in the middle of the week and the middle of the day. Think of all the people who are scrolling through their feeds during their lunch break! That’s why it’s been recommended that brands and influencers alike post on Facebook right before the lunch hour in the middle of the week. Wednesday at 11 a.m. and from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. has been standard for a while now.

That being said, in 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic forced people into their new work-from-home roles, Facebook started to see more activity throughout the workweek. It’s reported that posting on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 10–11 a.m. show the highest result. In fact, almost any weekday at 11 a.m. is a safe bet, according to Sprout Social.

Instagram

Instagram engagement has also shifted due to the Coronavirus outbreak. Before everyone worked remotely, Instagram saw the most engagement on Wednesday in the middle of the day, similar to why Facebook saw so much usage at this time. So the industry standard was Wednesday between 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. for posting.

With significant social media behavior changes, the best times to post on Instagram have expanded from one day a week to three days a week, Monday, Tuesday, and Friday. It’s still best practice to post around 11 a.m. on Instagram.

LinkedIn

The most significant change that LinkedIn has seen throughout the last year isn’t so much what days people are actively engaged, but instead, what time users are active. We’ve noticed that most people tend to log into LinkedIn halfway through the workweek and throughout, Wednesday through Friday. Pre-pandemic LinkedIn saw the most engagement in the morning on Wednesday, the afternoon on Thursday, and at the beginning of the workday on Friday. With new work-from-home hours and more autonomy in the average workday, peak engagement hours have changed. LinkedIn has reported that the best time to post would be at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, between 9 and 10 a.m. on Thursday, and between 11 a.m. and 12 p.m. on Friday, right before peak engagement hours.

Twitter

Twitter sees most of its engagement in the mornings when users are catching up on the news. Twitter is one of the few social media platforms that hasn’t seen much of a change in their engagement during the Coronavirus pandemic. The best times to post on Twitter remain to be Wednesdays and Fridays between 7 and 9 a.m.

TikTok

TikTok is one of the few social platforms that report many users that use the app daily. Oberlo says that at least 90% of TikTok users access the app on a daily basis, which means that you can put your content on TikTok any time throughout the week and still get your message in front of a crowd. In general, the best time to post on TikTok is early in the morning, between 6 a.m. and 10 a.m., and in the evening, from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. Additionally, since TikTok is a new and growing platform, there have not been any significant changes in usage times due to the pandemic.

Pinterest

Pinterest is another platform that hasn’t seen much change due to COVID-19. Most Pinterest users are mothers with busy schedules, so while most other media outlets report that the worst time to post on social media is on the weekend, Pinterest challenges that status quo. The best days of the week to post are on the weekends, Fridays, and Saturdays, at night between 8 and 11 p.m.

YouTube

YouTube videos are mostly watched in the evening and right before the user heads to bed. That’s why you should be making an effort to have your video indexed and published by 4 p.m., so it’s ready to go for the surge of viewers from the hours of 7 and 10 p.m. Thursdays and Fridays are known to have the most traffic as it is towards the end of the workweek when users are beginning to wind down in preparation for the weekend.
