4 SEO Mistakes You’re Making

Many internet users still rely heavily on search engines when looking for new products or information, which means SEO really is as important as you think. You may have the best intentions of improving your search engine optimization. The problem is, you may be setting yourself up for failure without even realizing it.

It’s important to periodically evaluate your SEO strategy, and ask yourself if your tactics are really working for you. Because more often than you might think, businesses are doing themselves more harm than good with their current SEO strategy.

Here are Four SEO Mistakes You’re Making on Your Website

Mistake #1 – Outdated Methods

As with most things on the internet, SEO is constantly changing, adapting, and improving. If you want to ensure that your SEO stays as effective as possible, be sure that you’re keeping up with the latest changes, improvements, and updates. Google, for example, is constantly changing its algorithms that rank pages in a search result. If you don’t stay well versed on these updates, what may have been working for you may now be working against you.

Mistake #2 – Misusing Keywords

While keywords still remain an important part of SEO, it is important to use them correctly. Filling your website to the brim with keywords isn’t the answer, and neither is a randomly selected word. Choosing your keywords should be strategic. Too broad and your competition will be too stiff. Too obscure and you won’t get any hits. Ideally, you want to find that sweet spot between broad enough to attract visitors, but specialized enough that you’re attracting the right kind of visitors and not competing with everyone else on the internet. Think about what your ideal consumer might be searching, and find similar keywords to use.

Mistake #3 – Forgetting the Technical Side

SEO does have a very technical side, one that actually builds your website in a way that makes it as searchable as possible. If you’re ignoring this aspect of SEO and focusing all your energy on keywords, your website is going to suffer. Be sure you’re integrating your keywords into your title tags and headings, while maintaining a clean and concise layout. Don’t forget about your meta descriptions and alt text. Your website should be built with good link structure. You should have good URL architecture. These aspects of SEO can be overwhelming if you’re not a marketing professional, or know your way around website construction. If that’s the case, it’s well worth your time to hire someone to handle these aspects for you.

Mistake #4 -Poor Content

You may have the best keywords and a website built perfectly for SEO, but without fresh content, you’re not going to rank very well. Aside from putting off the algorithms that rank your website, the living, breathing humans you hope to visit your website and become customers are less likely to stop by if the content is outdated and uninteresting. Make sure you are constantly updating your website, adding new products, or posting new content regularly with a blog.
